A gas vent is used in installations, where under normal circumstances, the process can accept a mixture of both liquid and gas. It is not designed as a phase separator, and it cannot effectively separate entrained gas from the liquid.

However, it is useful as a means of keeping a line 'live' in intermittent processes. In conjunction with an automatic gas vent valve, it can be used to pre-cool a line prior to the start of a shift. A gas vent is normally mounted at the end of a line and will only pass gas - the presence of liquid will shut down the vent.
